The Collective Unconscious

This summer the Collective Unconscious Theatre is mounting the French drama The Maids by Jean Genet, which follows the twisted role-playing fantasies of two sisters plotting to kill their employer. Directed by Rachel Samson, The Maids runs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Weber Fine Arts Building July 28th – 30th and August 4th – 6th.

Tickets are $8 and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. Doors open at 7:00 PM and the show begins at 7:30.

Round two of auditions for our next show The Maids will be held Sunday June 5th at 7 PM at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s  Eppley Administration building (next to the student center) in the Eppley Auditorium.

Needed:

Three women of various ages (20-60)

Roles:

Solange: (25-35 years old) maid and protective, abusive, and tortured older sister of Claire. She possesses the drive to do incredible things but lacks the courage to follow through. She is vicious but capable of great acts of love and kindness towards Claire, whom she may or may not have incestuous feelings for. Around Madame she is the soul of courtesy.

Claire: (20-30 years old, but younger than the actress playing Solange) maid and passive-aggressive younger sister of Solange. Alternating between fearlessness and cowardice, she uses her words to create elaborate fantasy worlds and often uses role play to attack her sister. Powerful, grandiose, and frenetic, around Madame she is quite meek.

Madame: (20-25 years old) A young, wealthy woman who is a consummate actress. Self-absorbed and patronizing, she may at first seem to be stupid, but she is observant and dangerous.

Rehearsals will begin on June 27th, and the performance dates are July 27th-30th and August 4th-6th.

We have chosen to produce The Maids by Jean Genet this summer at the University of Nebraska at Omaha! UNO alumni Rachel Samson will direct the show in which two sisters fantasize about killing their employer. The Maids will run July 27th-30th and August 4th -6th.

A word from our director:

“The Maids is a labyrinth of complex relationships, role playing and social dissonance. Working on an Absurdist piece is a great opportunity for actors as we practice Realism almost exclusively in the Omaha area, and the experience will be a different process from what we are accustomed to during our normal careers. The Maids remains true to the Collective’s goal of social theatre by examining power relationships between employees and employers, master and slaves, sister and sister, and the cruelty inflicted by all. It examines the very fabric of our social system, that of the service industry and its patrons. I cannot think of a better play to resonate with our own service-driven country.”

We are hosting a Social Justice Movie Night with a showing of  Milk at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Mammel Hall on Feb. 3rd. Food will be provided! UNO’s Theatre department chair D. Scott Glasser will lead a brief discussion following the movie.

We are preparing to produce a show in spring 2011. Our first show was “invisibles” by Joseph Fogarty, which enjoyed a successful run at UNO from July 28^th, 2010 to July 31^st.

Mammel Hall is a new building on UNO’s South Campus located at 6708 Pine Street in Omaha, NE 68106.

Collective Unconscious member Joe Fogarty has received a 2011 Omaha Entertainment and Arts Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for his play invisibles!

We produced invisibles  this past summer with a run from July 28^th through the 31^st at UNO’s Weber Fine Arts building. The play is a character study of homeless people living in a commune and was inspired by Maxim Gorky’s The Lower Depths.

We are looking for original scripts to produce at the University of Nebraska at Omaha for a two-week run in the spring!  Play submissions will be accepted until March 31^st, 2011. Scripts should be 90 minutes or less and may contain any subject matter, though preference will be shown for scripts that address social issues or raise social awareness.

Submissions can be sent to Literary Manager Joseph Fogarty at Collective Unconscious Theatre Company, 4902 California St. Apt. 5, Omaha, NE 68132. Manuscripts may be full-length plays, one-acts, translations, adaptations, and musicals. Please include: a mailing and email address, a cover letter detailing the development and/or production history of the play, and a synopsis of the script.

After rehearsing throughout the summer, our first show, “invisibles” by Joe Fogarty, ran from July 28th through the 31st at UNO’s Weber Fine Arts building.

Though “invisibles” only ran for one weekend (four days), over 150 people came to see our show! Thanks to everyone who came out to support us!

Local playwright Ben Graber and writer/designer Molly Welsh were among the attendees, and hosted a feedback session after Friday evening’s show. To leave feedback about the show, please visit our “Contact Us” page.

Offering discounted tickets for canned food donations, we provided the Omaha Food Bank with a barrel and a half of canned goods thanks to our generous patrons! We will use profits from the show to help us realize our dream of becoming a non-profit theatre focused on social change.

We are currently searching for a performance space and will produce a one-act in the fall, this time with a longer run. Location, dates, and other details will be announced soon!
